No matter how many times this cat falls(literally off the stage) I still always root for him. I know what it’s like. Yea, they’re poppy and the music is nothing more than about the dough BUT not in the 70′s/ They were the rockers that made Rock n’ Roll in the 70′s kick motherfucking ass! They earned the moniker, “Toxic Twins” it wasn’t just handed to them. Gotta love what they have been through and still seem to find the glue that keeps them, together. What did Steven say? “We’re all here because we’re not all there” Right on.

George, the one with a genuine gift

I believe that most guitarist love playin the guitar more than doing anything else. This is why they are so good. But then there are the few that take it beyond that. Of course there was Jimi Hendrix who took a left handed guitar, restrung it so at least the strings were right handed, then taught himself how to play. Perhaps he just didn't know any better or he was determined to make use of the only resources he had to achieve his goals. Knowledge may be power but sometimes a lack of it can create miracles... or music! Jimi H had a great sound obviously and was one of the few musicians who smiled a lot when he plyed. This must have been when he was most comforatble. Prince is another one that becomes part of his guitar. He literally becomes the guitar and the guitar is the messenger. If you haven't seen Prince perform, you may want to. When they did a tribute to George Harrison Prince was asked to perform While My Guitar Gently Weeps written and sung by George as a Beatle. Prince played that song so extraordinarily well that if it didn't bring a tear to your eye then nothing will. George Harrison would have applauded the loudest standing on his toes. Then of course, Maestro Page. He's a superior and master guitar player that will play until they put him in the ground. This isn't to say people like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tony Iommi and countless others are not great guitar players but there are only a small handful that are gifted with that little extra something that seperates them from other guitarists being worlds apart. As a Beatle, George wrote and sang, Here Comes the Sun, Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps and several other great songs.
Too young to even get in to play

In the early days of the Beatles John felt George was more like a puppy just tagging along. However, John was genuinely impressed with George's guitar skills from the first time he heard him play.

Written after an English winter that “seemed to go on forever” as Harrison said, the track is as relevant today as it was then. Although darkness can be a scary thing, the sun eventually comes up. And this song is the anthem to prove it.

Olivia Harrison; I think the basic thread that runs through it is his guitar playing and his sentiment, which veers towards a person questioning their existence and also somebody with a sense of humor ... And also, there's a longing, especially, like in the song 'Isn't It a Pity.' He really meant that. He used to feel so bad when bad things would happen. I think the ultimate was a couple of months before he died was 9/11. He was so disappointed and so heartbroken, like everyone else.

At University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium was a concert Rolling Stone magazine called the second most important event in rock & roll history: The Toronto Rock & Roll Revival. Chris Walter was there.When Alice Cooper arrived on stage Chris wrote: "where did this band come from? I had never heard of them before. They all had beautiful waist length hair like they were on the set of a Pantene commercial. They really rocked though, and the keyboard player also controlled the lights. This was before Alice Cooper was painting faces or cutting off heads on stage. Just a great band doing great original rock & roll. They did throw a couple of bags of chicken feathers all over the crowd though.
Delta Bluesman born and died at the Crossroads

Robert Johnson was a young black man living on a plantation in rural Mississippi. Branded with a burning desire to become a great blues musician, he was instructed to take his guitar to a crossroad near Dockery Plantation at midnight. There he was met by a large black man (the Devil) who took the guitar and tuned it. After tuning the guitar, the Devil played a few songs and then returned it to Johnson, giving him mastery of the guitar. This was, in effect, a deal with the Devil; in exchange Robert Johnson was able to create the blues for which he became famous. Though he recorded only 29 songs in his brief career - 22 of which appeared on 78 rpm singles released on the Vocalion label, including his first and most popular, “Terraplane Blues” - Johnson nonetheless altered the course of American music. “Robert Johnson is the most influential bluesman of all time and the person most responsible for the shape popular music has taken in the last five decades.” Such classics as “Cross Road Blues,” “Love In Vain” and “Sweet Home Chicago” are the bedrock upon which modern blues and rock and roll were built. Eric Clapton said, “Robert Johnson to me is the most important blues musician who ever lived....I have never found anything more deeply soulful than Robert Johnson. His music remains the most powerful cry that I think you can find in the human voice.” OnAugust 13, 1938: Robert Johnson died three days after he was poisoned by the jealous husband of a woman he began seeing during a stint at the Three Forks juke joint in Greenwood, Mississippi. New Photo of Blues Legend Robert Johnson Surfaces … Maybe

It may be one of the greatest finds in Delta blues history. Seventy years have passed since Robert Johnson died in 1938, and thus far only two photos of the legendary artist have surfaced. Until now... Maybe. Guitar connoisseur Zeke Schein may well have uncovered a third photograph of Johnson. Schein discovered the photo on eBay in June 2005, after typing the phrase “old guitar” into the auction site’s search engine. His winning bid of $2,200 earned him the sepia-toned snapshot, which had been incorrectly described by the seller as a photo of B.B. King. Many experts do agree that the photo appears to be genuine.

Jack and Meg unleashed a performance ferocious enough to crumble the building to its foundation a good few months before its slated demolition (as was the gossip throughout the night). Jack's falsetto and slicing guitar chops threatened to deteriorate the crowds' eardrums by ten years in ten minutes. By the end of the second song, everyone, band included, was drenched in sweat, as ventilation in the room was non-exsistant. They drilled favorites like "Hotel Yorba" and "Seven Nation Army" into the diehard fans, as well as a few new instant classics from Icky Thump.
4 Dead in Ohio ~ Kent State, May 4th, 1970

In May of 1970, Neil Young quickly wrote a song called "Ohio," hotly responding to the Kent State shootings, during which the National Guard killed four students and wounded nine others. He recorded it with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, who had just come off a hit record from the previous year, and the song peaked at #14 on the pop charts. Over the years, Young has recorded several such protest and/or political songs, including 1967's "For What It's Worth," 1970's "Southern Man" and 1989's "Rockin' in the Free World," which slyly took a stab at then President George H. W. Bush by mentioning his campaign speech staple "a thousand points of light." Young is now in his 60s and once again something pissed him off to the point that he has gone back to the recording studio. This time though, there's no beating around the bush (so to speak). No more messages hidden inside innocuous song titles. This time we get "Let's Impeach the President."

Richard Nixon had been elected President in 1968, promising to end the Vietnam War. By 1969 Nixon announced that the US would be invading and going to war in Cambodia. The new invasion of Cambodia angered those who believed it only exacerbated the conflict. Many young people, including college students and teachers, were concerned about being drafted to fight in a war that they strongly opposed. The expansion of that war into another country appeared to them to have increased that risk, though the number of troops serving in Vietnam peaked in 1967, well before that time. Across the country, campuses erupted in protests in what Time called “a nation-wide student strike”, setting the stage for the events of early May 1970. May 4th, 1970 - Kent Stat University; Students who were shot had been protesting against the American invasion of Cambodia, which President Richard Nixon announced in a television address on April 30. However, other students who were shot had merely been walking nearby or observing the protest from a distance.

The Heartbreakers

The Heartbreakers were 100% rock'n'roll and combined the best and worst of that epithet. A killer live band but a band awash with drugs and excess. With living guitar legend Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan, ex of The New York Dolls, they had the link with a glorious glam punk past not hurt by Richard Hells sojourn in the band for a short while. Ignored by the American scene they hopped onto the ill fated Anarchy Tour with the Sex Pistols. By the time they hit the UK they were ready to rumble and the nascent punk rock scene opened up to a band with attitude, history and a killer live act. Signed to Track records they released the classic album LAMF and two singles Chinese Rocks & Get Off The Phone. None were successful and this and the drugs did for the band who split up. Sadly drugs really did do for the band as both Nolan and Thunders later died drug related deaths.

70′s Rock n’ Roll

This was Uriah Heep's first live album, and their third US Gold album. I have always loved their music, stealin one of my favorite songs by them, but for whatever reason they seem to be a band that's been forgotten. Not sure why because their music is that classic Rock n' Roll from the 70's. If you haven't heard this album you got to pick it up. I'm sure you can order online, collectors editions... you'll be glad you did!

wHO REALLY SHOT AND KILLED sAM?

Sam Cooke has been described as one of the most influential rhythm and blues singers to emerge in the 20th Century. Cooke could exude soul stirring sensuality that went from the sacred to the profane in the same breath. The son of a Baptist minister, Sam Cooke was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on January 22, 1931 but grew up in Chicago. He joined a Chicago gospel group called the Highway QC’s and became their lead singer at the age of 15. He later became the lead singer for the Soul Stirrers. Influenced by Ray Charles, Cooke was the pioneer cross-over artist from gospel to rhythm and blues. Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and others would eventually follow. With the support of record producer Bumps Blackwell, Cooke left the Soul Stirrers to record rhythm and blues. He was also the first African American popular singer to manage his own record label (SAR). Cooke’s label, which he formed while still in his twenties, produced other R&B artists such as Bobby Womack, Billy Preston, and Johnny Taylor. By 1957, Cooke recorded “You Send Me,” the first of a series of back-to-back hits which included “Everybody Loves the Cha, Cha, Cha,” “Only Sixteen,” and “Wonderful World.” By the 1960s, he recorded such hits as “Chain Gang,” “Cupid,” “Twisting the Night Away,” and “Another Saturday Night.” Cooke’s incredibly moving “A Change is Gonna Come,” which reached the charts a year after his death, reflected his gospel roots and spoke to the African American-led civil rights movement of the time. Like his protégé the late Marvin Gaye, handsome Sam Cooke is now often remembered as much for the notoriety of his death as much as his rich, smooth singing voice. He was shot to death by a prostitute outside a seedy Los Angeles motel on December 11, 1964. Still, this magnificent artist left a music legacy that continues to speak to the soul of the African American experience. Although there is an official story behind Sam Cooke’s murder, the story doesn’t add up as it was reported. Too many holes in the logic. The newspapers reported a different Hotel than the one Sam had actually died at. Thousands of dollars and credit cards were missing to make it look as if it were a robbery and not just a conspiracy to stomp on the Blues. He was shot, or at least shot at, three times. Some reports say two missed. Some say all three shots hit their mark. And then he was clubbed over the head? A woman reports that she was kidnapped? Yet hangs around the scene? Sam’s clothes were stolen. Sam’s money was stolen except for about $100. What’s with that? One of the women involved sued his estate for almost quarter of a million dollars. Was it just about the money, or was this another attempt to cover up the real purpose of his murder? Too many twists on the logic for this to be only what it seems. The Deaths of Mama Cass, Harry Nilsson and Keith Moon

Mama Cass Elliot famously died choking on a ham sandwich, everybody knows that. Except she didn’t. The myth started because the first doctor who examined her after her death, a Dr Anthony Greenburgh, told the press the next day: “From what I saw when I got to the flat she appeared to have been eating a ham sandwich and drinking Coca-Cola while lying down - a very dangerous thing to do…she seemed to have choked on a ham sandwich”. Dr Greenbugh overlooked the rather important fact that the sandwich was by the side of her bed and lay untouched but by then it was too late. The press reported his initial comments and the doctor unwittingly gave rise to the sandwich myth. Elliot actually died from natural causes due to being overweight - she was prone to going on crash diets which in the end fatally weakened her heart. The sandwich story was a famous case of when “the legend becomes fact, print the legend”. On 29 July 1974 Cass Elliot had just finished two nights at the Palladium and was pleased with the several standing ovations she had received. Before she went to bed she called her former band member Michelle Phillips who later recounted: “She had had a little champagne, and was crying. She felt she had finally made the transition from Mama Cass”. Cass Elliot was just 33 when she died.

Harry Nilsson and Keith Moon became friends because of their mutual love of the booze. They met on a set of a film produced by Ringo Starr called Son Of Dracula with a number of other musicians. Keith remembered: “We were supposed to be on the set at six, but it was nine before everyone was there. Then somebody brought out a bottle of brandy. Me, I think. Ah-Ha-Ha-HAHAHA! And Peter Frampton said no, no, too early, and some of the others said no. But ‘Arry was standing there with an ‘alf-pint mug. I knew at that moment it was destiny put us together. Ahhhh-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” After the death of a second friend in his bed Nilsson quickly sold his flat to fellow Who member Pete Townsend and moved back to Los Angeles permanently. Of course like Cass, and especially Moon, Harry Nilsson liked having a good time and his consumption of drink and drugs were once described as Herculean, which is one way of describing pissing your talent away for over twenty years. Marianne Faithfull once said about Harry “We used to do drugs together. And when I say drugs, I don’t mean those airy-fairy drugs they do nowadays. I’m talking about narcotics.” Elton John once described seeing Nilsson in a recording studio, ‘He opened his mouth to sing, and blood poured out, he had done so much coke that his throat just hemorrhaged. And do you know what? He didn’t even notice.’ Compared with his two friends however, he managed to live to a relatively grand old age of fifty two before his body gave up. After surviving one the previous year he died of a second heart attack in 1994. At his funeral it was said that aftershocks from the recent Northridge Earthquake rumbled in the background. A joke made the rounds during the funeral that the earthquake was the result of Harry getting to Heaven and discovering that there were no bars. It’s perhaps interesting to note that Mama Cass, a person it would be fair to say liked a bit of food, died from trying not to eat with a heart fatally weakened by too many diets. Coincidentally Keith Moon, a man with a prodigious appetite for booze, died from an overdose of medicine prescribed in an attempt to stop him drinking. I’m not sure if Nilsson died from anything that was the opposite of what he liked to do, but not long before his first heart attack he found out that his entire $5 million fortune had been embezzled leaving him and his family almost destitute. It was said that he never really recovered from the shock. In 2001 the building at Curzon Place containing Harry Nilsson’s old flat was bought by a developer who completely changed the interior and the three flats on Harry’s floor were knocked into two luxury flats. In 2002 these were placed up for sale at one million pounds each.

Proof that some Rock Stars have sold their soul to the beast

I loved U2 in the 80's and everything they represented. But when 25 - 30 yrs goes by and you reap even more than a lion's share of money you begin to think you're pretty special. They were great when they just stuck to their music. Now that bonehead has to get involved with everything and thinks he may have to save God. He obviously suffers from Delusions of Grandeur. Man, what do you say about a guy like Eric Clapton? Yea, the music, all the bands he's played in, solo artist extraordinaire. However, there is a deep and dark soul in this cat that Eric deals with primarily through his music but not always. Check it out, Eric Clapton has been a major shaping force on the world of music since his emergence onto the scene. He is thought of by most as being one of the most important guitarists of all time. Clapton hasn't only been important as a solo artist, but also as an important member of many other bands. Eric Clapton is the only person to be inducted three separate times into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. He has been inducted as a solo artist, but also as a member of Cream and of the Yardbirds. He also has played on some of the other most important recordings of all time, even if he was uncredited due to contractual legalities. He was a close friend of George Harrison, and played guitar on The Beatles' White Album, as well as playing with artists like Dire Straights, Bob Marley, Frank Zappa, Elton John and Sting. Whenever Clapton broke a guitar string during a concert, he would stay on stage and replace it. The English audiences would wait out the delay by doing what is called a "slow handclap". Clapton's nickname of 'Slowhand' came from Giorgio Gomelsky. He coined it as a good pun. He kept saying Clapton was a fast player, so he put together the slow handclap phrase into Slowhand as a play on words. Another piece of useless information but like Jimmy Page/Robert Plant and others it’s interesting. Eric had his demons, drug and alcohol addiction. In fact, he withdrew from recording and touring to isolation and nursed his heroin addiction which produced a career hiatus interrupted only by the Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971 (where he passed out on stage, was revived, and continued the show. maybe it was just a speedbump). He kicked heroin then began drinking heavily. Clapton finally called his manager and admitted he was an alcoholic. In January 1982, Roger and Clapton flew to Minneapolis, MN where he entered a drug and alcohol rehab. On the flight over, Clapton indulged himself in a great amount of drinks, for fear he may never be able to drink again. Clapton said; "In the lowest moments of my life, the only reason I didn't commit suicide was that I knew I wouldn't be able to drink anymore if I was dead. It was the only thing I thought was worth living for, and the idea that people were about to try and remove me from alcohol was so terrible that I drank and drank and drank, and they had to practically carry me into the clinic". Tragedy seemed to follow Eric Clapton. On 27 August 1990, fellow guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, who was touring with Clapton, and two members of their road crew were killed in a helicopter crash between concerts. Then, on 20 March 1991, Conor, who was four years of age, died when he fell from the 53rd-storey window of his mother's friend's New York City apartment, landing on the roof of an adjacent four-storey building. Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven". He holds no other artist in higher esteem than Robert Johnson (Robert is the next sidebar profile) In 2004, Clapton released a CD and DVD titled, "Sessions for Robert Johnson". Clapton said of Johnson, that he was “...the most important blues musician who ever lived. He was true, absolutely, to his own vision, I have never found anyone more deeply soulful than Robert Johnson. His music remains the most powerful cry that I think you can find in the human voice, really”. Jimi Hendricks really did have a hard time tuning his guitar. He starts his show at the Winterland with two to three minutes worth of guitar tuning. Now, that's entertainment. And this is a problem because why? I would have patiently waited if it took him a half hr. The better it’s tuned the better the sound is going to be that he’s after that night. People at that caliber never wing it. They are that good because they put their life into it. Are there people out there that were lucky enough to see Michael Jackson perform? Now I thought he was a freak but that guy, by far, unequivocally, nowhere close to being matched was the best performer I have ever seen. These people are just different that way. This is why they are so good.
Prince

Prince took the stage at first avenue in Minneapolis the other night at 2:45am. This is after he already performed twice that day. Police were told that if the Purple Highness went past 3:00am to bust in and shut him down which is just what they did.
Hold on, hold on.

Led Zeppelin was not always famous. During their concert, when Jimmy Page breaks a guitar string, the audience remains silent, while Robert Plant meekly apologizes for the delay and politely attempts to engage the non-responsive crowd in conversation about the venue being very warm. Then Robert could have asked if Led Zeppelin were keeping them awake. If so, this will change momentarily. They would have laughed, guaranteed! Then you could have slightly changed the lyrics from the line in stairway to heaven; "So you do remember laughter" and this would have getten them going! Next time Robert ;)
John had a way with words

(What John is really saying is when he came out of a blackout it was a rush to suddenly realize that you're in the middle of a concert. The weird thing is there is no recollection of getting there, where there is, how long have you been playing... not sure what he meant by being in the eye of the hurricane. Because for me, I mean I heard it was always a situation where someone was asking a questions. It would be like, "I said sir, do you want these on hangers or in a box" and I would just reply kind of dumbfounded like, "I don't know, I just got here")

Man, Imagine just kicking it on this roof with The Beatles jammin. I often wondered if it were Brian Epstein who was the marketing genius behind The Beatles success. And again, strategically from a marketing standpoint. As we know he didn't have anything to do with the rooftop gig b/c he had already died. BUT, he could have mentioned something like that before he passed. The double white album with just their name, Abbey road, the characters they play, the VW license plate 28IFIL, all the celebrities pics on Sgt Peppers... the guy definitely knew something.

The Loo; Unknown origin and theories

The Loo: The origin of the (chiefly British) term loo is unknown. According to the OED, the etymology is obscure, but it might derive from the word Waterloo. The first recorded entry is in fact from James Joyce's Ulysses (1922): "O yes, mon loup. How much cost? Waterloo. Watercloset". Other theories are: • That it derives from the term "gardyloo" (a corruption of the French phrase gardez l'eau (or maybe: Gare de l'eau!) loosely translated as "watch out for the water!") which was used in medieval times when chamber pots were emptied from a window onto the street. However the first recorded usage of "loo" comes long after this term became obsolete. • That the word comes from nautical terminology, loo being an old-fashioned word for lee. The standard nautical pronunciation (in British English) of leeward is looward. Early ships were not fitted with toilets but the crew would urinate over the side of the vessel. However it was important to use the leeward side. Using the windward side would result in the urine blown back on board: hence the phrases 'pissing into the wind' and 'spitting into the wind'. Even now most yachtsmen refer to the loo rather than the heads. • That the word derives from the 17th century preacher Louis Bourdaloue. Bourdaloue's sermons at the Saint Paul-Saint Louis Church in Paris lasted at least three hours and myth has it that wealthier ladies took along "travelling" chamber pots that could be hidden under their dresses whenever the need arose to avoid the need to leave. Due to the popularity of the myth the bowls became known as Bourdaloues after the preacher and the name became corrupted to portaloos and sometimes just plain loos due to the habit of shortening words in slang.
Battle of the down and out public restrooms

I remember this one in TJ, Mexico after running... maybe another time. In any event, too close to the heater and why there is a heater in TJ? Doesn't matter, must have been for the Josin's anyway. Look closely at the double security. This was comforting. Two doors with locks. The problem was they locked from the outside and this made me suspicious. I tried to make sense of it but by the time I did I heard; " click... click" Then a voice that obviously spoke english as a second language said; "Amigo" I repsonded quickly (this is between locked doors with the master key in the possssion of the hotel concierge) "Yes Ameegio, Assmigo... Sir! Yes Sir, some handsoap would be great. I'll wait. On your way now" Is he a thug? A Policia? A thug Policia? Is he going to get the handsoap? Maybe when he opens the door I'll rush him, hit him over the head with... with, there's nothing in here damn-it!!! Why does this always happen to me. Shit! Then; "Amigo, you must pay to get out or you stay in there forever. I'm leaving now. Be back in a week or two" I never thought of a thought so fast in my life; " No, no, no, NO! Stay right where you are... Sir." Silence... More silence. " Sir?" I'm thinking who is this guy? Pancho Villa or Lazaro Cardenas del Rio. Either or I've decided it's time to fight and I should remind him of the Alamo. Bad idea, they kicked our ass.Gen. Santa Anna was a madman. I'll poker face it even more that I am crazier. In a quiet, demonic, horse voice I said confidently; "Unlock and open this door now you fat little stupid mexican. If you don't I'll kick it down then kick your sorry ass... bean breath" Panch Anna laughed then said as I hear the key go in the door' "Amigo, you very funny gringo. Me like you. Because you are so funny we will let you have a choice. Most gringos we just have our way with and leave them crying like little bambina's. Not you, you will have a choice Amigo" the door swings oprn and there standing in a space of about 3 ft x 4ft were 6 of the meanest, biggest, gun totin smellier than burrows who never bathed mexicans. They were laughing that laugh that I was dead. Then I thought there is a way out of this. "Assmeegio" I said. Panch;" Amigo?" Me;"take me to your hottest, spiciest chili peppers. I'm hungry!" They laughed even harder. Paunch;"Oh Amigo, this will be worth more than your life" "Now damn-it" I demanded. Just as that second door opened I pushed, grabbed a gun from one of them, firing shots in the air screaming; "Attica! Attica!! Attica!!!" and never ran to the border so fast in my life. That's how I remember it and that's the last time I ever stepped foot on Avenida Revolucion. My next story on Mexico will be a good happy one. I met and befriended a one legged mexican midget. He loved to roller skate and so did I. We would go all the time. He got in for half price because of the one leg thing, plus he was like 3 feet tall... anyway, I had to push him because he couldn't get any momentum going on his own. Every once in a while I would get carried away and just fling him as hard as I could and his scream alone was hilarious. The wall always stopped him so he was cool. I often wonder whatever happened to him. He was a nice little fella. Always wanted people to call him by his spiritual name, Running Deer. For now, I just wanted to get back to the comforts of my la casa Loo.
